Bumping it up again; based upon recent posts seems like it could be useful.

Did the upgrade, add another drive to the list.
Fujitsu MHN2020AT - it seemed to be a bit slimmer like stripey joe's.

The store owner told me they're the same as the IBM'S !

Wow, this and the OS upgrade makes me feel like I'm not working with rocks and stone knives anymore. Out feakin'standing.

Just got an email from an Ebay supplier that he'll be shipping my Toshiba 20Gig hard drive at the end of the week so I'll have it next week! My brother in law who is a computer whiz will come over to my place to install it for me! I can't wait also! What a pain it must have been to put up with those small drives! I guess I'll have to do the software update soon!

I have a question for you guys. If there are two gig partitions, how do you access each partition? The screen (with my stock drive installed) shows everything in one partition, I assume. Is it like partitions on your computer, where you can have c:, d:, etc.?

To select the partition, you go into the utility menu, and then do Drive select. This will show you all the drives you have, and each partition. You simply cursor over to the drive/partition you want, and hit exec

Sorry for my previous question guys, I realized it had been answered already.

Now, Has anyone used a 7200 RPM drive with the VS?
I noticed that all the drives used are at 4200 and an average seek time of 12MS.
I wonder if anyone knows of a drive that perhaps is at 7200RPM with faster seek time?

best,

There should be no reason why a faster drive wouldn't work. It has to be a slimline 9.5mm drive, so I don't know if there are any faster drives that fit that spec. Unless anyone has already done it, you would have to try it and see. Like I say, in theory it should work, because the VS operating system is obviously faster than the drive (otherwise you wouldn't get drive busy), so a faster drive should help with that.

Guys, Ive noticed that the SCSI hard drives are getting cheaper as well. I wonder if anyone has used one for the VS?
Also, the speeds are in the 7200 RPM range or even higher I think. Im not too good at this, but I think that would be a good move if you are recording a bunch of tracks would you think?
Also, will any 20 SCSI drive work?

best,

Yes, you can use scsi drives, but only as external drives, not internal (I don't know if that is what you meant). Generally speaking, you can use any 20 gig scsi drive. I have two, a 7200rpm and a 10,000 rpm, and they work great (No drive busy). There are some drawbacks, mainly that you can't burn a cd from an external drive. You also have to ensure that your scsi chain is terminated properly, or you will get weird results

Thanks Dave,
So if I dont use the cdr2 burner to burn cds, then, im ok? I usually mix down to my Marantz 630 via DIGI out.
I dont have anything connected right now to the scsi port. a guy is selling a 18 gig Lacie drive for like 135 bucks. Will I be able to still backup from that drive if I connect it in the scsi chain to my VS?

yes, you can backup songs from the scsi drive, you just can't burn an audio cd (bizarre, I know).
Are you backing up to cd's ? If so, you can daisy chain the scsi drive to the burner, so you are not plugging and unplugging

Thanks Thats exactly what I needed to know.
I was wondering if I can just put it in the chain. Not that I know how to do it. I actually never done it. But I guess then Its a good deal right? The 18 gig scsi drive for 135 bucks?
Thanks

DCMA,

Hey, you could go with a 50 gig drive, but you'd only be able to squeeze 16 gigs of useable space out of it because of the os and partitioning. You also need to double check compatibility before installing ANY new drive, no matter the size.

If anyone is interested in seeing another artice on Hard Drive Replacement and OS Updating with PICTURES, come visit my site. I just added a VS-1680 section with pages on my mod adventures. It compliments this thread nicely.

Just an excuse to bump this topic back up because its such a major upgrade! I just got my Toshiba hard drive last week! I recently upgraded to the VS-1680 from the VS-840EX but encountered a few buttons acting up so I'm waiting to get my VS-1680 from Roland, Canada (Ontario)! Looking forward to more space! Having only 3.1 Gig is too limiting and I'm guessing it feels like being tied behind the house!

Just a word to the wise which I'm not all the time, but if you're thinking of doing the hard drive upgrade check the Roland site for the list of compatible hard drive or call them to ask for the proper 20 Gig hard drive because from this forum I ordered the "MK2016GAP" instead of the "TOMK2016GAP" because I couldn't find it and I thought that it would probably work, but guess what? It doesn't! Not compatable at all with the VS-1680, errors, not reading all the drives etc... I'm lucky I was able to return the drive to "Computer Parts Plus" minus the restocking fee! I'm now looking at the Hitachi MK23CA-15 which is recomended by Roland and they have the MK23CA-20 which may be okay but I have to check with Roland on that one! Merry Christmas all!
Here's a link to the drives listed by Roland as being compatable! Just press on the link and then after you get their choose VS Series compatable media guide!http://www.rolandus.com/support/support_docs/index.asp?CatID=12&SubCatID=48&Pr odID=VS-1680

Hi Steve, I notice that at the front of your post you mention the TOMK2016GA as the hard drive to get and later on the next page I think they talk about the MK2018GAP as being okay! Can you still acquire the TOMK2016GA? Assuming that your hard drive works fine, I just want to point out that there is a difference between the two hard drives! (TOMK2016GA and the MK2016GAP) The MK2016GAP is definitely not compatible!

Honestly, Scoob - I don't really know. I pieced this thread together a long time ago from several different sources, and since then its taken on a life of its own. Most of the people who post on this thread know a lot more about the drive types than I. Keep 'em straight for me!

Steve, I errored in getting the wrong drive so it must be possible for others to do the same! My Brother in Law was talking to Roland Canada the other day and they said the VS-1680 was compatible with some 20 Gig hard drives but couldn't list them off the top of his head but refered me the the Roland web site which is probably not up to date! If anybody knows for sure the brand they installed in their VS1680 please list them here! Thanks!

Steve, is it possible that you made an error listing TOMK2016GAP instead of TOMK2018GAP at the first of this Post? Later in the post people are saying they put in the MK2018GAP! As you know I had to send my MK2016GAP back (wasn't compatible) or maybe it was just a bad drive! I don't know! Has anybody out there put this same drive (MK2016GAP) in their machine? I'm just a bit confused here as to what happened?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a little information on both drives but as far as I can tell, there is not much difference but there is some to note, one has an "AT4 interface" and the other has an "AT5 interface"! Also the buffer on the MK2018 is twice that of the MK2016GAP! Now I'm not sure but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that a replacement drive had to be AT5 compliant! Not sure about that though!
20GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD
MK2016GAP (HDD2154)
Reaching new heights in technology excellence, Toshiba introduces the MK2016GAP, boasting the highest areal density on the market today. With 17.6 gigabits per square inch on this dual platter drive, Toshiba has once again proved industry leadership and technology expertise. In addition to leading areal densities, this drive also offers a 1,024KB buffer - twice the size of competitive drives

20GB capacity
9.5mm High
13ms Average Seek Time
ATA-4 Interface
66.7MB/s Ultra DMA/66 Transfer Rate
1,024KB Buffer
300,000 MTTF Hours

20GB 2.5" Super Slimline (9.5mm) HDD
MK2018GAP (HDD2164)
Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. (TAIS), Storage Device Division introduces the MK2018GAP 2.5-inch 20GB Hard Disk Drive. The MK2018GAP offers the industries highest areal density per platter, at 35.1gigabits per square inch. This new drive offers enough capacity for portable video recording and editing, with lower power consumption compared to the traditional 3.5-inch HDDs. This functionality provides ideal storage for a range of commercial and consumer notebooks, as well as non-PC applications such as PDAs, printers, copiers, GPS systems and MP3 players. The MK2018GAP is ATA-5 compliant, supporting high transfer rates of up to 100 megabytes per second.
