Tony, I use a similar method when I track vocals. I set up a small diaphragm condenser about a foot to the left of the big Rode. They're both recorded on different tracks.

I stand in front of the small one, usually about three feet back, as I project pretty far as well. Tape doesn't work for me, but I have a drum riser that I set up in front of, and I set the mics so I can keep my heels against the riser.

I never thought about it, but I guess I have an 'imaginary' close mic that I pull back from when I get louder.

It works for me...

Excellent Post Tony, I have copied it to a word pad doc so I can really try to grasp some of the stuff you said.
One of my big problems is compressers, I know they kick ass, I just dont know how to use them well, wish they made a "compresser for the technically challenged". The one I have is a Behringer "AUTO-Pro", the salesman assured me it was fully "automatic"...ha ha thats a laugh, this thing has more buttons and knobs and inserts and sidechains than all my remote controls combined, (exaggerating here).
One thing else that I TOTALLY agree with you on is the Large Diaphram Condenser mic. I have been using old SM58s and a EV stage mic for years, but recently I bought a MXL 1006, made by Marshall, Large Diaphram Mic, brand new for 79 bucks, MAN what a difference!! It really works great, and I power it with my Behringer Mixer Boards built in Phantom power. I can only imagine how great one of those $10,000 Neumann mics would sound, if a $79 dollar MXL sounds this good.
As far as speakers, I think you are right that studio speakers would be best, but what I do is this, I use cheap little speakers to do my mixdown and make them sound best as I can, then I listen my mix in various things, like my daughters boombox, and my trucks crappy stereo, and then in my good home stereo. I have found if I can make it sound good on the cheap little speakers, then when I get it into a good system, it really sounds good.
Oh one more thing, I like you, miss the "knobs" on recorders, I like adjusting my treble, bass, pan, etc via knobs instead of always having to go to that little screen display.
Thanks again man, you sound like a real pro here, and I'm gonna try your techniques.
Jack
